While I naively thought we had simply stepped into a very cute, people and cupcake-crammed establishment, I later learned that this bakery was made famous by its appearance on the popular television show, Sex and the City. The interior was very small, most of the floor space being dedicated to displays of beautifully decorated cakes and cupcakes.
Although known for their cupcakes, my brother ordered Magnolia’s Famous Banana Pudding, which is his favorite treat from the bakery. Described as “layers of vanilla wafers, fresh bananas, and creamy vanilla pudding,” I was a bit skeptical to my brother’s intense enthusiasm for this dessert, particularly because I’m not a huge fan of bananas. I mean, bananas are alright, but given another choice, I probably wouldn’t pick the banana. Tasting a spoonful of this banana pudding, I understood my brother’s deep love for this dessert. The bananas tasted fresh and were very prominent and the pudding was creamy and light, almost whipped, so you could try to convince yourself you were eating something healthy.
I did eventually try one of Magnolia Bakery’s cupcakes, but I forgot which flavor (my visit was from May 2009). Compared to another designer cupcake company, Sprinkles, Magnolia Bakery’s cupcakes did not have as much frosting, were more moist, and the frosting was not as sweet. I prefer Magnolia Bakery cupcakes to Sprinkles cupcakes.
