Finish Chelsea’s Race 5k Review

Devin and I both ran the Finish Chelsea’s Race 5k earlier this month. This was Devin’s first running race, so I ran alongside him.

I was struck by how many runners came to this event. Set in Balboa Park, this race drew about 5,000 runners and walkers. Runners were distinguished by their blue racing bibs and the orange timing chips attached to their shoelaces. Walkers and untimed runners wore white racing bibs and were asked to line up near the back of the starting gate in consideration of the timed runners.

The race course ran across Cabrillo Bridge, past the Spreckels Outdoor Organ, through the parking lot of the Air and Space Museum, down the onramp to the 163 North, on the freeway for a stretch, then ended with a winding incline. Along the course, we could catch glimpses of the Coronado bridge, Pacific Ocean, and downtown San Diego. The winding hill at the end of the course was brutal, but I was encouraged when I saw a man pushing his kids in a double-stroller. We later saw him sprinting towards the finish line as we ran in behind him at 33:45, a personal best for Devin!
