Baja Fish Tacos

With a few more boxes waiting to be packed as we moved out of our Santa Ana apartment, our last meal in Orange County was Baja Fish Tacos for some fish tacos that we had heard about from friends and strangers.

I love fish tacos. Fish tacos are one of the foods that prevents me from becoming a true vegetarian. But I’m really picky about my fish tacos. To me, a proper fish taco contains a battered and fried filet. I just don’t get that excited about grilled fish tacos. Sorry, Wahoo’s. At Baja Fish Tacos, their battered and fried taco is called Ensenada Style, so I ordered a blackened fish taco and an Ensenada Style fish taco. Unfortunately, arriving home, I found that I had been given an Ensenada Style fish taco and a shrimp taco, so I didn’t get to try their famous blackened fish taco. The Ensenada Style fish taco was delicious. It was everything that I love about fish tacos: crisp and light battered fresh filet, double corn tortilla wrap to prevent dripping, fresh pico de gallo (not too much), shredded cabbage (maybe a bit too much), and creamy sauce. While not what I ordered, the shrimp taco was also good. It was bursting with good-sized grilled tender shrimp, diced cabbage, Cotija cheese, and fresh pico de gallo. As you can see, I ordered my tacos as a combo, which came with white rice and either pinto or black beans. The white rice and black beans rounded out my order to make this a very filling and satisfying meal, even with the mix up with the tacos.

Devin’s heft carne asada burrito was filled with lettuce, cheese, guacamole, and he added sour cream. He asked that the pico de gallo be left out. It was filled with lots of well-cooked carne asada and not too many vegetables. For a place that specializes in fish tacos, it’s good to know they also do carne asada well.

When I’m in Orange County again, I’d like to try their blackened fish taco, but it will have to be when I have plenty of time to wait, because Baja Fish Tacos often had people standing outside waiting to place their orders. You know it’s good when people are willing to wait!
