Bisbee Grille

After our visit to Tombstone, we headed about forty minutes south to Bisbee. Bisbee is a small, historic town set in the mountains. I had been there as a kid to explore the inoperative copper mines, so I wanted to share the experience with my cousin. Unfortunately, we arrived sometime after noon and the rest of the tours for the day were booked, so we returned the next day. Just as when I was a kid, we were each suited up with a yellow raincoat, belt, battery pack, flashlight, and hard hat. Safety first! The Queen Mine Tour enters the inoperative copper mine on a small train and there are two locations that passengers disembark the train and follow a guide through the copper mine. The tour takes about an hour and is very interesting, although the novelty of wearing the tour gear and riding the train is entertaining in itself.

But once again, we were left in a tourist trap during lunchtime. One of the first spots we found to eat that also served beer was the Bisbee Grille. The Bisbee Grille is located in an indoor shopping center with kiosks selling handmade jewelry, an ice cream shop, coffee shop, art stores, and restrooms located upstairs next to real estate offices. The restaurant was busy with tourists and after some wait, we were seated in a booth. I ordered the Malibu Vegetarian Burger which came on a standard white toasted bun. The patty was made out of brown rice, corn, carrots, peppers, and onions and was on par with the many frozen veggie patties sold at the grocery store. The mashed avocado was a nice touch to add flavor to the burger, but didn’t put it over the top. I really enjoyed the beer battered french fries, which were thick cut, freshly fried, and had a nice crispy exterior from the light beer batter.

My mom ordered the Portobella Ravioli, which came in an enormous bowl. The portion looked meager in comparison to the bowl, but halfway through the meal, my mom mentioned that cheesy, creamy sauce made the dish very heavy so the portion was just right. The portobella mushroom raviolis were served in the cream sauce with spinach, diced tomatoes, onions, and came with two slices of garlic bread which were perfect for dipping into the extra cream sauce.

The Bisbee Grille was a nice place to sit and relax after the mine tour, although it was a bit of a wait to get seated, have our food ordered, and receive our food. It was also difficult to grab the attention of our waiter, even after most of the tourists had cleared out of the restaurant. It’s not a place for a speedy bite to eat and the dishes are also a bit heavy: pasta dishes, fish dishes (fish and chips, shrimp scampi, etc.), hamburgers, steaks, ribs, meatloaf, and some salads.
