Sublime Alehouse

After a morning trip to the San Diego Safari Park (they have a new fruit bat exhibit!), we realized we were really hungry and stopped by Sublime Alehouse for a quick lunch. I was surprised that there were only two other patrons enjoying the bar when we arrived at 1PM on Sunday.

I was very conflicted between the pizzas, macaroni and cheeses, sandwiches, and burgers until I saw the Jalapeno Popper sandwich under the Grilled Cheese heading. The Grilled Cheese sandwiches at Sublime Alehouse are more akin to paninis, as the bread is coated with parmesan cheese before being grilled and achieving golden brown grill marks. The Jalapeno Popper Grilled Cheese had  jalapeno slices with seeds removed and was bursting with cream cheese, cheddar cheese, and bechamel sauce. While the parmesan crust made the crust crispy, the bread was thick enough to stay soft. The jalapenos didn’t give off any heat that I could feel, but gave the sandwich some additional crunch and flavor in every bite. The jalapenos went great with the cream cheese and cheddar cheese combination. The grilled cheeses come with a choice of french fries, coleslaw, soup, or cucumber salad and can be upgraded to truffle fries. I upgraded to the truffle fries for $2. The truffle fries were topped with parsley and coated with truffle oil, rendering the ketchup unnecessary. They were made to order and very well seasoned.

The Hawaiian Burger comes with a ring of roasted pineapple, caramelized onions, bacon pineapple spread, and applewood smoked bacon. The burgers are cooked to order with the buns slightly toasted. Even with the addition of toppings, the beef flavor really comes through and the patty remains juicy.

I will definitely be back to try their macaroni and cheese, beer flights, and pizza!

OK, what did they sprinkle on the fries in the first picture? This is making me very hungry.

The truffle fries are tossed with truffle oil, parsley, and parmesan cheese. They’re really addicting!

This was the first time I tried truffle fries and it’s really made me spoiled!
